Kids Guitar - Measuring for the Appropriate Size
Choosing the Correct Size Guitar for a Child.
- Q. How do I know which size guitar to order for a child?
- A. To avoid injury and to develop proper technique it is important to purchase a guitar that is the correct size for the child. Our recommendation is a nylon string classic model. The critical dimension is length, not width of the guitar. Here are suggested sizes by general age of a child and suggested string length for general ages.
- The suggested size by age:
- Ages 4- 6 = 1/8 or 1/4
- Ages 7- 9 = 1/2
- Ages 9-12 = 3/4
- Ages 12 and up = 7/8or 4/4.
- The suggested ages by string lengths:
- Age 4 - 6: 18" and under
- Age 7 - 9: 22" and under
- Age 9 - 12: 25" and under
In our opinion, parents should not be required to purchase an instrument that is not economically feasible. There are acceptable scale size guitars to fit a wide range of budgets. If your child is or will be taking lessons the instructor should have some suggested brands for you. In the absence of a teacher contact us.
